The
textiles and garments industry contributes to industrial output, employment and
exports, thereby plays an important role in the Indian economy. This industry
is estimated to account for 4% of GDP and about 10% of country’s exports. India
accounted for 5.3% of world textile exports and held 3.3% share in world
clothing exports during 2012-2013.
During
2013-14, textiles and readymade garments exports from India amounted to $31.4
billion, showing an increase of 14.9% over the previous year. During this
period, exports of ready-made garments, cotton yarn and fabrics and manmade
textiles grew by 15.5%, 18.1% and 12.9% respectively.
