Trinimas -2011

Christmas is the time to enjoy happiness, love and care. Christmas Eve is always a special occasion for each and every person, as it is the time of re-union of family members, sharing of gifts, and lots more fun. We all love to be happy always and have fun with our friends and relatives.

Nowadays celebration has changed its face, celebration is not restricted among family members alone but it is extended to schools, colleges, organisations and offices. Trinity College of engineering also celebrated its first Christmas program of the college on 22^nd December, 2011. Students named the program as TRINIMAS -2011 and the meeting was inaugurated by the chairman Sri. Noble John in the Seminar Hall of the college. He gave a beautiful Christmas message on love, care and sharing. Next was the message by the college Principal, Dr. T Jayasingh. He talked how technology changed our mode of celebration and wished all staff and students a merry Christmas. We moved on to J.Thampi Jayasingh, the HOD, who gave a short and warm Christmas greeting. The meeting concluded with Vote of thanks by student representative Sidhivinayak.

The auspicious time of cultural program began in few minutes. It started with an English group song followed by two other songs and two dance performances by our students. students, teachers and staff were having real fun. Program concluded with another group song “Feluda  …”.

The first Christmas celebration of Trinity College of Engineering will always be remembered as first is always precious to each and every one of us. We all wish that TRINIMAS will go on for years and years.

Kerala needs development not promises

Kerala, the god’s own country, is thriving in politics. The state faced an assembly election in April 2011 and the voters supported both LDF and UDF, but UDF won for four seats. Political campaigns are familiar to Keralites and they know the promises given to them may or may not be kept, still it goes on.

Before the election phenomenon parties will give a souvenir as part of their administration agenda. But how many of them include programs for the basic development of our state. The declarations will be announced in front of media persons, who we consider to respond to any injustice. What really happens is, those declarations are published in media without any analyzing process. We don’t bother whether it includes any developmental programs for our state, district or locality.

When someone introduces a new project for city development, there will be many to oppose. The intention is no other party should do any development. We cannot walk at Thampanoor when it rains heavily because of the flooding of drains. Why no agenda is made to avoid this situation? Covering of drains, sanitation facilities, availability of water and the waste management system must be considered while preparing developmental agenda. Basic development programs are lacking in our state instead priority is given to personal developments of the politicians.  

Once in every five year we go for voting, one or the other person come to power and this continues.

Harmful Tobacco

Anti-tobacco day is observed all around the world on May 31, every year. We started observing this day since 1987. 

Young generation is addicted to tobacco products. You can find smoking habits among school children. We don’t really care the harm caused by these products unless it happens to our kith and kin. Why are people addicted to tobacco products? It is mainly because of the nicotine present in it. Nicotine makes tobacco addiction. 

 

Use of tobacco products cause lung cancer, throat cancer, mouth cancer, chronic pulmonary diseases, emphysema, bronchitis, strokes and heart attacks. Nicotine reduces supply of oxygen to heart, increases blood pressure and heart rate and also causes clotting of blood. It damages the cells of coronary artery and other blood vessels. 

Awareness may reduce the use of this product. Though it is written in the packet cigarette smoking is injurious to health, people use it. Now the US Food and Drug administration released some graphical images to deter the smokers. Some sentences they selected are as follows:

• Cigarette causes strokes and heart disease.
• Cigarettes cause fatal lung disease.
• Cigarettes cause cancer.
• Smoking can kill you.
• Cigarettes are addictive.

Some treatments to avoid tobacco usage are nicotine replacement therapies, bupropine SR and varenicline tartrate (this reduces the tendency to smoke).

According to WHO, around 35% men in developed countries and 50% in developing countries smoke. China, Russia, US, Japan and Indonesia are leading nations in cigarette consuming. WHO expects that the death rate caused by tobacco is to rise ten million by 2020.

TV terms

Stand up: reporter stands in a relevant location and makes the report

Off-diary: an article that was not scheduled to be covered but that a journalist writes on his or her own initiative

Shooting ratio: it is the ratio between the amount of material that is filmed and the amount used in the finished television programme.

Shooting script: it is the final screenplay for a cinema or television film that includes directions for shooting and is divided into scenes with the shots numbered consecutively.

Aspect ratio: it is the ratio between the width and height of an image on-screen, such as 4:3, which is the usual television screen size, or 16:9, which is wide screen.

Spectacle: in cultural theory, something that people want to look at, which attract attention.

Types of language

Journalism is a rough draft of history. A reporter’s job is to cover what happened and how it happened. They should not censor out things- should give accurate information. The language used by a journalist can be classified into three. They are Report language, Inference language and Judgement language. 

Report language

This is very dry in tone. The message conveyed through this is explicit without interpretation comment or value judgement. The language used in instruction manual is an example for report language.

Inference language

This is making a statement about the unknown on the basis of the known. 

Judgement language

This makes inference one step further. It makes value statements about the events, people or issues. It also brings rightness or wrongness in a matter.

Ethics of a journalist

1                     Journalist should be honest, fair and courageous in gathering, reporting and interpreting information.

2                     Ethical journalists treat sources, subjects and colleagues as human beings deserving of respect.

3                     Journalists should be free of obligation to any interest other than the public’s right to know.

4                     Journalists are accountable to their readers, listeners, viewers and each other.

Eyes in communication

Down the ages people have recognized the eyes as a means of communication and have considered the look as having special significance. Looking, according to legend, has always been associated with powerful emotions and in certain situations it was forbidden. In the Bible we have the cases of Adam, who was afraid to look God after he had sinned by eating the forbidden fruit, and Lot’s wife, who turned into a pillar of salt because she looked back to see the city destroyed. In Greek mythology, Orpheus lost Eurydice because he did not keep his bargain of turning back to look at her. In our own culture, the 2000 year old Thiruvallavur Thirukkural has two chapters(71 and 110), ‘ Understanding the Other’s Mind’ and ‘Ascertaining Each Other’s Intentions’, where the importance of the face and the eyes in communication is emphasized. Urdu poetry too is replete with verses on the topic.
