nameless

Cameroon Love Letter

Film: Cameroon Love Letter
Director: Khavn De La Cruz
Language: English

It is a documentary type, which tells the minds of two people who are living apart at present. They are writing letters and telling each other that they are separated at far distance in such a way that they can never be re-united. The entire movie has a dull screen and shots, and the movie lag so much. I did not feel any feature which attracted me to this movie. Dialogues are less and the images could not convey the feelings or mind of the person who is travelling. But the culture is shown in behaviour, food items, their functions and rituals. The director tried to show many incidents in 70’ film. The movie also says the trust and love once lost can never be regained.

Janaki

Film: Daughter of Earth
Director: M G Sasi
Language: Malayalam

The movie tells the mental and physical difficulties faced by a 12 year old girl. She doesn’t have anyone to trust, care and love her. Shekharan master, a Gandhian came as her protector but his death is again pushing the girl to the state of loneliness. The movie begins where a granny is telling story to her grand-children. But the story she tells is about Janaki, which does not have any link in terms of time. Title is apt for the movie, as throughout the film Janaki is the lead role. Janaki is just one among thousands in the streets who don’t have any shelter, who don’t have anyone to love and care. Music played is too noisy though the purpose was to express happiness and joy. The movie also indicates the political state in Kerala and the influence of communism in youngsters many years back.

The Image Threads

Film: The Image Threads
Director: Vipin Vijay
Language: Malayalam
IFFK award: Hassankutty award for best Indian Debut film

The tale of the story is very simple, the video chatting between a man and a woman. But the tale is narrated in a different way. The director has given a different face and approach to the movie. The man is an IT professional but he is very much influenced by the black magic of his grand-father. He is explaining his feelings to the woman and trying to become closer. Chat relations do not have a long duration and that is how the movie ends. May be, the next chat might begin for both of them or they might chat again another time. It shows the real man and woman who is so much attached to the natural force; man is always influenced by nature and human feelings. Technology and graphics is used well in this movie. I liked the film, as it is different from other movies.

Unreal Forest

Film: Unreal Forest
Director: Jakrawal Nilthamrong
Language: English - Thai
It’s a difficult movie to understand. The scenes are not continuous. This is a movie inside a movie concept. It shows the tribal culture and their way of prayers and superstitions. The preparations needed before shooting a film and the struggle in shooting is narrated in this movie. Theme music is used and also traditional tribal music. The discussions are made regarding each shot, the placing of camera, camera movements and the locations. Currency used is shown. This movie also shows people don’t do treatment for disease; instead they depend on a sorcerer who words are considered the ultimate. This ignorance made the father to keep the boy in a basket and drop in the waterfalls. The different shots of waterfall are an added beauty.

Mamas and Papas

Film: Mamas and Papas
Director: Alice Nellis

The movies shows the four couples in different situations- one couple is in need for a child, one is trying to abort the foetus, another couple is trying to rent the uterus to give good living condition to their children and finally the couple who lost their child in an accident. Marriage is a contract of love, belief and care and children are always a blessing. Different attitudes of couples in having children matters a lot in married life. The title of the movie is appropriate. The movie tells us about the difficulties in adopting a child. Also it shows the role of children in the happiness and success of married life. Absence of children may lead to mental separation and illegal relationships. Also the beauty beneath the sea is shown well. Deep inside water also, mother and child relationship is shown clearly.

The Way Home

Film: The Way Home
Director: Dr.S.Biju
Language: Malayalam
IFFK award: NETPAC best Malayalam movie

This movie shows the struggle taken by a doctor to hand over a five year old boy to his father, who was the leader of a terrorists group. The landscape of Kerala, Kashmir, Ladak and Rajasthan is beautifully shot. The background music used is traditional music of Rajasthan and Punjab. The characters were given traditional costumes. A literary reference to Orhan Pamuk’s Museum of Innocence was made. Interest of children in listening story tales is shown. The movie shows the influence of terrorism on younger generations. Also is shows the two sides of terrorism, how common man is affected by terrorism and at the time of death all are equal. Once the death made the doctor lost his wife and child, but later that death gave him the five year old boy when the terrorist leader died.

Of Love and Other Demons

Film: Of Love and Other Demons
Director: Hilda Hidalgo
Language:  Spanish

The movie shows the power of church and bishops, the distinction between the white and black, the cruelty of nuns towards the mentally and physically challenged people. Indian medicines are considered illegal and a doctor is banned for using it. Instead of giving treatment to the dog bitten girl, the bishop was talking superstitious reasons. The movie shows the real and abstract scenes: the dream of the priest about the girl was abstract, when the candle fell down in the pond it still glows; it shows though the girl was in the cell she got some of relief from the priest and the lady who came to her cell. In the second dream when the girl try to take out the candle, water turns black, that shows the darkness spreading in the girls life when she was not allowed to go with her parents and the priest was withdrawn from his charge to look after her. Visualisation of the eclipse is also good. I liked this movie.

All Screwed Up

Film: All Screwed Up
Director: Line Wertmuller
Language: Italian

The movie shows the life style difference between the working class and capitalists. Most of the characters are migrants, and the movie shows their struggle to lead a good life with less amount of money. Growth of population, the common man who don’t have any family planning, the people struggling to earn a living for their children and the fascist cruelty are visualised well. It also shows how people are easily cheated in a city and how people fall in traps to earn money. Background music is played and repeated music is used. In the meat factory scene the close shot of the animal eye reflects the helplessness and the struggle of people to live well. It is a reflection of the social and political situation around us. But the thing we should realise is that even after years the lives of people do not change and their pains.

Please Don’t Disturb

Film: Please Don’t Disturb
Director: Mohsen Abdolvahab
Language: Persian
In this movie three life stories are shown in a parallel way. One is a work maniac husband and his wife, second is a notary officer and the third is the old aged couples. The movie shows very clearly how the lady is tolerating her husband who is always thinking about well settled future. On the other hand, the old man is a lazy person, not interested in any activities the old lady always compels him to do some work. Notary officer is a man who learned the difficulties of living in a city. The movie shows the Muslim culture. Their costumes are also apt for the characters. Also, the influence of TV on youngsters and elders is indicated. The title of the movie is a satire to the society. I enjoyed watching this.

Certified Copy

Film: Certified Copy
Director: Abbas Kiarostami
Language: French Italian English

This is a movie which shows the importance of relationships. Even if you separate from your loved ones their memories will never fade in your mind. Your mind always wishes to have their presence, love and care. The opening scene is the publishing of ‘Certified Copy’ by James Muller. The movie shows how much Muller’s wife wish to be with him. Though she lived away from Muller, her mind always expected to be with him. Finally when they are together she always try to attract him, which annoys him. But the story ends when they are in a room where they started their life. I think the lady is an image of an ordinary woman who wishes to get more importance from her husband. Each scene shows the lady’s attitude. Sometimes I felt may be because of the lady’s attitude, Muller was not willing to live with her. But somewhere deep in his heart he also loved her. That might be the reason why he walked with her.

Ramanujan

Ramanujan has been described as a person with a somewhat shy and quiet disposition, a dignified man with pleasant manners.

In mathematics, there is a distinction between having an insight and having a proof. Ramanujan's talent suggested a plethora of formulae that could then be investigated in depth later. It is said that Ramanujan's discoveries are unusually rich and that there is often more in it than what initially meets the eye. As a by-product, new directions of research were opened up.
