Textiles and garment industry in Indian economy



The textiles and garments industry contributes to industrial output, employment and exports, thereby plays an important role in the Indian economy. This industry is estimated to account for 4% of GDP and about 10% of country’s exports. India accounted for 5.3% of world textile exports and held 3.3% share in world clothing exports during 2012-2013.
During 2013-14, textiles and readymade garments exports from India amounted to $31.4 billion, showing an increase of 14.9% over the previous year. During this period, exports of ready-made garments, cotton yarn and fabrics and manmade textiles grew by 15.5%, 18.1% and 12.9% respectively.
